1000:1

Louisville, KY
Tri An Monument Competition
Collaboration w/ Zach Mulitauaopele
Summer 2016

How do you show gratitude to the people who gave their lives fighting one of the most controversial and unsupported wars in history?  1000:1 is a reflection of the history, culture, and people who fought in the war, but also gives hope to a brighter future for those affected by the Vietnam War and the bonds that formed.  Different zones of public, private, monument, and vista allows visitors to experience both the memorial and their own emotions on multiple levels.  The monument is a direct response of the topographical negotiation which cuts open the ground below and creates a new ribbon of remembrance.

The project name, 1000:1 is the ratio of casualties in the war to a singular beacon of light.  There are 315 lights which reflect the estimated 315,000 lives lost during this tragic war.  With this in mind, the beacons of light/deaths become the literal supporting elements of the new vista toward a brighter future.
