THE VAULT
Concept Design
Studios Architecture
Autumn 2016
A redesign of an existing lobby in the Flatiron District. The original vaulted form is unique to the entry but is broken into multiple materials that are out-dated and absorb the natural light.
The new design takes the vaulted form and creates a smooth single-surface created by painted white metal panels that begin to peel and turn as it arches from one side to the other. This reveals a repetition of light channels that illuminate the space with a soft glow and allows the space to feel much larger and brighter. One of these surfaces peels open and becomes the surface of the lobby desk that sits on top of a concrete base. Lastly, the elevator core at the terminus of the space is re-clad in a rough, highly textured concrete to juxtapose the smooth surface of the vault.
